Legislation

The Perley and Rideau Veterans’ Health Centre is a Corporation pursuant to the laws of the province of Ontario, incorporated by certificate dated 18 October 1897, and given its current name and objects by supplementary letters patent issued 29 December 1999.

In the provision of Long Term Health Care in the province of Ontario there are a multitude of laws and regulations that apply but there are some which stand out from the crowd for the purposes of Directors at the Perley Rideau. The first of which would be Ontario’s Corporations Act for it is under this statute that the Perly Rideau gains its legal personality and Directors should have some familiarity with its provisions especially those provisions which apply to not for profit corporations. The second key piece of legislation for Directors at the Perley is Ontario’s Charitable Institutions Act for it is this statute which governs the day to day activities at the Perley Rideau. Directors should familiarize themselves with this legislation. The last piece of legislation which is drawn to the attention of directors is Ontario’s Long Term Care Homes Act of 2007. This legislation has been ascented to by the Lieutenant Governor but has not yet been proclaimed into force pending the completion of its subordinate regulations. Proclamation is expected in the not too distant future. This statute will replace the Charitable Institutions Act and is a seminal piece of legislation for Long Term Care in Ontario. There are other statutes that impact upon the Perley Rideau and they are brought to the attention of Directors when issues arise that fall within their jurisdiction.
